The Mutual Security Credit Union Community Service Scholarships are awarded in honor of Berny Klaus and Joseph G. Fernandes.

Berny Klaus

Berny served as a volunteer at MSCU from 1983-2002. He was a role model for young people as a longtime volunteer fireman with Newtown Hook and Ladder Co. No. 1. Berny held a number of positions over the years including Chief Engineer and Fund Drive Chairman. He was a former Committee Chairman for Boy Scout Troop 370 and was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church. We honor his service by recognizing one of our aspiring young people who see value in giving back to their community.

Joseph G. Fernandes

Joe Fernandes served as a volunteer at Mutual Security Credit Union for over twenty-five years. In addition to his commitment and service to the credit union, Mr. Fernandes in his retirement dedicated his time to the community by working as a substitute teacher in 1998 in the New Milford school system. Savings Account
An account in your own name is required to establish membership and make you eligible for other services. You earn dividends (credit union language for interest) on your savings. Plus, you can make deposits or withdrawals as you need to. Someone in your family must first be a member in order for you to open a savings account. Click here for an application.

Checking Account
It's free of monthly fees, per-check fees, and minimum balance requirements. Your first 50 personal checks are also free. Use your Checking Account to pay your phone bill, car insurance, or purchases. If you're under age 18, a parent or guardian is required as a joint owner on your Checking Account.

Special Purpose Savings Account
This is a second savings account that you can use to set aside money for a special purpose, such as college, a computer, a car, or a stereo. You earn the same rate as the regular savings account, and can deposit or withdraw money at any time.

Money Market Account
You'll earn a higher dividend rate on this account, but the minimum balance needed to open it is $2,500.

Share Certificate
Deposit a set amount for a specific length of time (6-48 months). You'll earn a higher dividend rate, but cannot withdraw the money until the term is over. If you do, you get a penalty.

ATM Card
Get cash wherever you are for whatever you need from your savings or Checking Account. Our ATM Card works at all NYCE and Cirrus locations. If you have a Credit Union Checking Account, you can also use your ATM Card to pay for purchases at the cash register of select stores and pay for gas at most stations. Cash withdrawals of $60 or more and all "point-of-purchase" transactions are FREE! If you're under age 18, a parent or guardian must co-sign for your ATM Card.

Visa Card
Establishing a good credit history early on is an important step toward future success. Plus, a credit card is good to have in case of emergencies or unplanned expenses.
