The Mutual Security Credit Union Community Service Scholarships are awarded in honor of Berny Klaus and Joseph G. Fernandes.

 

Berny Klaus

Berny served as a volunteer at MSCU from 1983-2002. He was a role model for young people as a longtime volunteer fireman with Newtown Hook and Ladder Co. No. 1. Berny held a number of positions over the years including Chief Engineer and Fund Drive Chairman. He was a former Committee Chairman for Boy Scout Troop 370 and was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church. We honor his service by recognizing one of our aspiring young people who see value in giving back to their community.

 

Joseph G. Fernandes

Joe Fernandes served as a volunteer at Mutual Security Credit Union for over twenty-five years. In addition to his commitment and service to the credit union, Mr. Fernandes in his retirement dedicated his time to the community by working as a substitute teacher in 1998 in the New Milford school system.

  • Applicants need to be a Credit Union member or the child of a member to qualify for one of the SIX $1,000 Scholarships. Any high school Senior attending an institution of higher learning.
  • Students need a minimum grade point average of 2.5 to qualify for consideration. Students need to submit a 2-page application, an essay on community service, qualifications and financial need. The essay needs to be double-spaced and no more than two pages.
  • MSCU will be accepting applications beginning February 1, 2006. Scholarships will be awarded in May 2006. A Scholarship Committee will make selection of the winner. Applicants will be evaluated on essay, grades, Honors/Awards, Curricular, Extracurricular and Community Service Activities, Employment and Leadership Positions.
